Modern bonded materials allow worn teeth to be rebuilt to their original length, shape and function, and the results can be remarkably natural. A front tooth worn thin at the edge can often be restored in a single visit with tooth-coloured composite, shaped by hand and polished until it disappears into the tooth.
Heavier wear needs more substantial restorations, but the principle is the same: what has been lost can be replaced.
Why the cause comes first
This is the part that separates a repair that lasts from one that fails, so I would rather be blunt about it.
Teeth wear down for a reason, usually grinding, acid erosion, or both together. Rebuild the teeth without addressing the cause and the same forces set to work on the new restorations, which are generally less hard-wearing than the enamel they replaced.
So the order is: identify the cause, protect against it, then rebuild. If grinding is the driver, a custom night guard comes first and stays afterwards. The rebuilding options
Which one suits depends on how much tooth has been lost and where.
Composite bonding. Tooth-coloured material bonded directly onto the tooth and sculpted by hand, usually with little or no drilling. Ideal for worn front edges and often completed in a single visit at modest cost.
White fillings. For worn or damaged areas within a tooth, particularly on back teeth.
Inlays and onlays. Custom-made pieces bonded into place, which handle heavy chewing forces far better than large fillings while preserving more natural tooth than a crown.
Crowns. Where a tooth is severely worn or weakened, full coverage restores both strength and appearance.
I would always aim for the most conservative option that will genuinely last, which for wear often means starting with bonding rather than jumping to crowns.
When many teeth are worn
Wear rarely affects one tooth in isolation, and when it runs across much of the mouth, treating teeth one at a time is not the best approach.

This matters particularly with severe wear, because rebuilding heavily worn teeth may involve restoring the height of your bite, which needs planning rather than improvisation.
How long does rebuilt work last?
It depends on the material and, more importantly, on whether the cause has been controlled.
Bonded composite typically lasts around five to eight years before wanting refreshing, and it is easily repaired or replaced. Crowns and onlays commonly last ten years or more.

Is it ever too late?
Very rarely. Even significantly worn teeth can usually be rebuilt, and severe wear tends to need more planning rather than fewer options.
Where teeth have worn to the point of exposing the nerve, root canal treatment may be needed before rebuilding, but that is a step along the path rather than a dead end.
The genuine risk of leaving it is that wear accelerates. Once enamel has gone, the softer dentine beneath wears far faster, so the same number of years does progressively more damage. Earlier is always easier.
What about the cost?
It varies enormously depending on how many teeth are involved and which treatments they need, which is why an examination and written plan comes first.
