Gum Disease Treatment in Clacton-on-Sea at Tender Dental Care

Why Healthy Gums Matter

Teeth get the attention, but gums, and the bone beneath them, do the holding. Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults, more than decay, and its most dangerous habit is silence: the early stages rarely hurt. Here's what makes gum health worth your attention:

The foundation

However strong a tooth is, it's only as secure as the gum and bone that anchor it.

Silent early stages

Early gum disease rarely hurts; bleeding when you brush is often the only warning it sends.

Reversible, caught early

At its first stage, gum disease can be halted and reversed completely, with no lasting damage.

Whole-body links

Gum health is increasingly linked with general health, including diabetes and heart health, one more reason to look after it.

The difference between the reversible stage and the destructive one is mostly time, which makes gum disease the strongest argument on this site for regular check-ups and hygiene visits.

Gingivitis: The Early, Reversible Stage

Red, puffy gums that bleed when you brush: this is gingivitis, gum disease's opening chapter, and the one with the happy ending.

What you need to know about gingivitis:
  • The cause is plaque: the soft bacterial film that gathers along the gum line, inflaming the gum it touches.
  • The signs are mild: bleeding on brushing, redness, puffiness, sometimes tender gums or persistent bad breath.
  • It's completely reversible: remove the plaque, professionally and at home, and the gums heal fully, usually within weeks.
  • The trap is ignoring it: untreated, gingivitis can progress to the deeper stage, where damage becomes permanent.

The right response to bleeding gums is beautifully simple: keep brushing (gently but thoroughly, including the gum line), book a hygiene appointment, and let professional cleaning plus improved home care do the healing. Most patients watch the bleeding stop within a fortnight or two.

Periodontitis: When Gum Disease Runs Deeper

If gingivitis is left to progress, inflammation spreads below the gum line, and the disease changes character.

What deeper gum disease involves:
  • Pockets form: the gum detaches slightly from the tooth, creating pockets where plaque and tartar gather beyond any toothbrush's reach.
  • Foundations erode: over time, the bone supporting the teeth is slowly lost, which is how firm teeth eventually become loose ones.
  • The signs deepen: receding gums, teeth looking longer, persistent bad breath, a changing bite, and eventually movement or looseness.
  • It's manageable, honestly: periodontitis can be halted and controlled, protecting what remains, though lost bone doesn't grow back, which is why acting now always beats acting later.

Treatment centres on meticulous professional cleaning of the root surfaces within those pockets, comfortably numbed where needed, alongside a home-care routine tuned to your mouth, and then maintenance, because controlled is a status you keep, not a finish line you cross. Dr Bilverdi will measure your gums, show you the numbers, and be entirely straight with you about what's happening and what will hold it.

Keeping Gums Healthy for Life

Whether your gums are healthy, healing or being held stable, the same daily habits do the protecting.

The habits gums love:
  • Clean between the teeth: interdental brushes or floss daily, because the gaps between teeth are where gum disease most often begins, and toothbrushes can't reach them.
  • Brush to the gum line: angling the bristles where tooth meets gum, gently and thoroughly, twice a day.
  • Don't smoke: smoking starves gums of blood supply, doubles down on disease, and masks the bleeding that would have warned you; our smoking cessation support can help.
  • Keep the professional rhythm: regular hygiene care removes the hardened tartar no home routine can, and keeps a trained eye on your gum measurements.

If one habit had to be chosen, it's the interdental cleaning: the single most under-used, over-performing minute in dental self-care. Dr Bilverdi will show you the right sizes and technique for your mouth, because interdental brushes only work when they actually fit the gaps they're cleaning.

Which Option Is Right for Me?

Your gums will tell you which door to knock on:

Bleeding when you brush

The early-warning stage: book a hygiene visit and let's reverse it while reversing is on offer.

Receding, loose or persistent

Longer-looking teeth, lasting bad breath or any movement: book a gum assessment, and the sooner the better.

All quiet

Healthy gums stay that way through routine: home habits plus regular professional care, at an interval set for you.

Whichever card is yours, the first step is the same measured, judgement-free assessment, and the plan that follows is built on your numbers, not a script.

You can view our current prices on our dental treatment fees page, and a full written estimate is always provided before any treatment begins.

What to Expect: Your Gum Care Journey

  1. Assessment: your gums are examined and measured, gently checking for bleeding, pocket depths and any recession, building a precise picture of where your gum health stands.
  2. Straight talk: Dr Bilverdi explains what the measurements mean in plain English, which stage things are at, and exactly what will fix or control it, with written costs before anything begins.
  3. Professional cleaning: plaque and tartar are removed above and below the gum line, with deeper root-surface cleaning, comfortably numbed where needed, for any pockets that have formed.
  4. Home care, tuned to you: the brushes, sizes and techniques that fit your mouth, coached properly, because your daily two minutes do more for your gums than any appointment can.
  5. Review and re-measure: your gums are re-checked against the original numbers, so improvement isn't a feeling, it's a measurement you can see.
  6. Maintenance for life: a recall rhythm that suits your gum health keeps everything stable, with hygiene care and check-ups working in tandem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Why do my gums bleed when I brush?

Bleeding is almost always inflammation caused by plaque along the gum line, the first sign of early gum disease, and the worst response is to brush more softly or avoid the area, which lets more plaque gather. Keep brushing gently and thoroughly, add daily cleaning between the teeth, and book a hygiene visit; in most cases the bleeding settles within a couple of weeks as the gums heal.

Q2: Is gum disease curable?

Honestly: it depends on the stage. Gingivitis, the early stage, is fully reversible, with gums healing completely once plaque is controlled. Periodontitis, the deeper stage, can be halted and managed for life, but the bone already lost doesn't grow back. That difference is the entire argument for acting at the bleeding stage rather than the loose-tooth stage.

Q3: What are the signs of gum disease?

Early: bleeding when brushing, red or puffy gums, tenderness, persistent bad breath. Later: gums receding, teeth looking longer, gaps appearing, a bite that feels different, and eventually teeth that move or loosen. And sometimes, deceptively, very little at all, which is why gum measurements at your check-ups matter even when everything feels fine.

Q4: Can gum disease really make my teeth fall out?

Yes; it's the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, ahead of decay. The disease doesn't attack the teeth themselves but the gum and bone holding them, and a perfectly sound tooth with destroyed foundations is still a lost tooth. The encouraging flip side: teeth are saved by exactly the boring, doable things this page describes.

Q5: What is a "deep clean" or root surface cleaning?

When pockets have formed, plaque and hardened tartar sit on the root surfaces below the gum line, beyond brushing's reach. Root surface cleaning removes these deposits meticulously, with the area comfortably numbed where needed, giving the gum a clean surface to heal against. It's methodical rather than painful, often done over more than one visit, and it's the treatment that stops periodontitis in its tracks.

Q6: Why are my gums receding, and will they grow back?

Common causes are gum disease, years of over-vigorous scrubbing, and simple ageing. Receded gums don't grow back on their own, but recession can usually be halted once its cause is addressed, and exposed, sensitive root surfaces can be protected and treated. The priority is stopping the retreat, which starts with finding out what's driving it.

Q7: Does smoking really affect my gums that much?

Profoundly, and in a particularly sneaky way: smoking restricts the gums' blood supply, which both accelerates gum disease and suppresses the bleeding that would have warned you something was wrong. Smokers' gum disease is typically more advanced by the time it's found, and healing after treatment is slower. Quitting is the single biggest gift you can give your gums; our smoking cessation support can help you get there.

Q8: Is gum disease connected to my general health?

Increasingly, yes. The strongest two-way link is with diabetes, gum disease makes blood sugar harder to control, and diabetes worsens gum disease, and research continues to associate gum health with heart health and more. Your gums aren't a sealed compartment; caring for them is genuinely part of caring for yourself.

Q9: Could my gums be behind my bad breath?

Very possibly; persistent bad breath is one of gum disease's calling cards, produced by the bacteria sheltering below the gum line where brushing can't evict them. Treating the gums treats the breath at its source, and our fresh breath page covers how the cause of persistent bad breath gets tracked down properly.

Q10: How much does gum treatment cost?

It depends on what your gums need, from a routine hygiene visit to a course of deeper cleaning. You can see our current prices on our fees page, and you'll always receive a written estimate, and a plain-English explanation of your gum measurements, before anything begins. Questions first? I’m terrified of the dentist! This has meant that I have avoided attending pretty much all my adult life. My teeth were in an awful condition and I had to do something. Attending Tender Dental Care has been the best dental experience I’ve had, the thought, time, and care given has made a world of difference not only to my confidence in my smile but the avoidance of attending the dentist has been a complete turn around. The quality of work has been to the highest standards and the clinic is professional and warm. I cannot express how grateful I am for such brilliant care.

As a very nervous patient (we're talking panic attack in the waiting room in the past) Dr. Bilverdi and his nurse have been exceptional. I'm no longer scared to go to the dentist! He has a very calming and reassuring manner and takes the time to explain everything clearly. A single-dentist practice that has been there for 26 years, with a nurse who has worked with him for 15 years, is the main reason I chose this practice. That's not to say the other practices in the area aren't good. But I found Dr Bilverdi to be outstanding in all areas. As an anxious patient, it's good to know who I'm seeing every time. It's refreshing when you call to make an appointment, and the dentist answers the phone, and then when you arrive, he is sitting at the reception desk to greet you. Had to have several injections today and can honestly say that I barely felt a thing with zero pain! The numbing spray before the injections worked brilliantly. If you are nervous about visiting a dentist, I can highly recommend Dr Bilverdi at Tender Dental Care.

I have been seeing Dr Bilverdi for nearly 20 years now. His care and attention to detail is first class and I have never had any trouble with his work. No filling or crown has fallen out and no treatment has had to be repeated. If you are not cleaning any areas he will point this out. A top class dentist and his assistant Hope is always very helpful and efficient.

I needed an urgent appointment because of a tooth infection. I was seen to really quickly, treated with antibiotics. The tooth was taken out a week later. I was really nervous but I was put at ease by Dr Bilverdi and his assistant. The tooth came out OK in fact I didn't even feel a thing. I recommend Tender Dental Care, as the name says, Tender care.

I rung around several dentists before settling on Tender Dental Care. They could see me weeks ahead of any other practice but what sold it to me was the fact that the dentist himself answered the phone and was really friendly. I was so nervous about going and actually quite embarrassed about the state of my teeth but Dr. Bilverdi was not only patient but totally non-judgemental. He explained everything that was happening and didn’t go straight in for “you need lots of fillings”, which is always a concern when you pay privately. He instead gave me a whole range of options to consider in my own time. Dr. Bilverdi really took his time with me and at no point did I feel rushed or like I couldn’t ask more questions. Hope is also lovely and the quiet, nicely decorated environment is so much nicer than the usual bustling dentist waiting room. I was the only person on site during the appointment. The price is pretty reasonable too, with each cost being broken down before you agree to it. I have finally found a dentist I trust and will absolutely not be leaving it 6 years until my next visit! I went in terrified and tearful that I was going to loose all my teeth but left feeling relieved and relaxed. I can highly recommend!
