Dental Bridges in Clacton-on-Sea

A missing tooth does more than change your smile. It can make chewing harder, let neighbouring teeth drift, and knock your confidence. A bridge fills the gap with a fixed, natural-looking replacement that stays in place day and night. At Tender Dental Care, dental bridges in Clacton-on-Sea are planned and fitted personally by Dr Bilverdi, matched carefully to your own teeth.

If you've lost a tooth, or you're facing an extraction and wondering what comes next, this page explains how a bridge works and whether it might suit you.

Ready to close the gap in your smile?

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A bridge does exactly what its name suggests: it bridges the gap left by a missing tooth, or several missing teeth, using the teeth either side as support. The replacement tooth is attached to crowns or wings fixed to those neighbouring teeth, so the whole restoration is cemented securely in place.

Unlike a denture, a bridge is:

Fixed

Your bridge stays in place permanently. There's nothing to take out at night and nothing that can slip while you eat or talk.

Natural-looking

The replacement tooth is matched in shade and shape to your own, so the gap simply disappears.

Comfortable

With no plate covering your palate or gums, a bridge quickly feels like part of you.

Protective

Filling the gap stops neighbouring teeth tilting and drifting, and keeps your bite working as it should.

At your consultation, Dr Bilverdi will examine the gap and the teeth around it, and talk honestly through whether a bridge is your best option, or whether an alternative such as a partial denture would serve you better.

Conventional Bridges

The most common design: the teeth either side of the gap are prepared for crowns, and the replacement tooth is joined between them as one solid, custom-made restoration.

Why patients choose a conventional bridge:
  • Strong and proven: a well-made conventional bridge copes comfortably with everyday eating.
  • Secure: supported on both sides, it's the most stable bridge design.
  • Restores more than the gap: if the supporting teeth are themselves heavily filled or damaged, their crowns restore them at the same time.
  • Long-lasting: with good care, bridges commonly last ten years or more.

Because the neighbouring teeth are reshaped to carry crowns, this design makes most sense when those teeth would benefit from crowns anyway, or are strong enough to serve as anchors for years to come.

Adhesive Bridges

Also known as resin-bonded or "Maryland" bridges, these use a discreet wing bonded to the back of a neighbouring tooth to hold the replacement tooth, with little or no drilling of the supporting tooth.

Why patients choose an adhesive bridge:
  • Kind to healthy teeth: the neighbouring tooth keeps almost all its natural structure.
  • No injections needed in many cases: preparation is minimal, making this one of the gentlest ways to replace a tooth.
  • Quick to fit: treatment is usually simpler and faster than a conventional bridge.
  • Discreet: the supporting wing sits hidden behind the tooth.

Adhesive bridges are particularly well suited to replacing front teeth where biting forces are lighter. Dr Bilverdi will advise honestly whether your gap and your bite suit this gentler design.

Replacing an Existing Bridge

Bridges serve faithfully for years, but they don't last forever. If your bridge is loose, damaged, or the teeth beneath it have developed problems, a replacement can restore security and appearance.

Why patients choose a replacement bridge:
  • Renewed confidence: a loose bridge is uncomfortable and risks damaging its supporting teeth.
  • A fresh appearance: older bridges can look worn or show a dark line at the gum; modern materials give a cleaner result.
  • Protects the anchors: replacing a failing bridge promptly helps save the supporting teeth beneath.
  • Honest assessment first: sometimes a bridge can be re-cemented or repaired rather than replaced.

If your bridge feels loose or has come off, keep it safe, don't attempt to re-fix it yourself, and call us on 01255 422506. The sooner it's assessed, the better the chance of a simple fix.

Which Option Is Right for Me?

The right way to replace a missing tooth depends on the gap, the teeth around it, and your priorities. As a general guide:

Bridge

Ideal if you want a fixed solution and the teeth beside the gap are suitable anchors.

Partial denture

Ideal for wider gaps or several missing teeth, and the most conservative option for the teeth either side.

Leave the gap?

Sometimes reasonable for an unseen back tooth, but drifting teeth and an unbalanced bite are real risks worth discussing first.

There's rarely one "correct" answer, which is why the consultation matters. Dr Bilverdi will lay out your options plainly, with the advantages and trade-offs of each, so the decision is genuinely yours.

What to Expect: Your Treatment Journey

  1. Consultation: Dr Bilverdi examines the gap and the neighbouring teeth, usually with an X-ray, and confirms which bridge design suits you. You'll receive a written plan and costs before anything begins.
  2. Preparation: with the area comfortably numbed, the supporting teeth are prepared. For an adhesive bridge, this step is minimal.
  3. Impressions: a precise mould is taken, and the shade of your natural teeth is matched, so the laboratory can craft a bridge that blends in seamlessly.
  4. Temporary cover: where needed, a temporary restoration protects the prepared teeth while your bridge is made.
  5. Fitting: your finished bridge is tried in, checked for fit, bite and appearance, and then fixed securely in place.
  6. Review and aftercare: Dr Bilverdi shows you how to clean around and beneath your bridge, and checks it at your regular visits to keep it serving you well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Does having a bridge fitted hurt?

No. The teeth are comfortably numbed during preparation, so you shouldn't feel pain. Some mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards is normal and soon settles. Adhesive bridges often need so little preparation that treatment is entirely painless.

Q2: How long does bridge treatment take?

Usually two visits a couple of weeks apart: one to prepare the teeth and take impressions, and one to fit the finished bridge. You'll be told exactly what to expect at your consultation.

Q3: How long will my bridge last?

With good care, bridges commonly last ten years or more. The key is keeping the supporting teeth and the gum beneath the bridge clean and healthy, backed up by regular check-ups.

Q4: Will people be able to tell I have a bridge?

It's very unlikely. The replacement tooth is matched in shade and shape to your own teeth, and because a bridge is fixed rather than removable, there's nothing to move or click when you speak.

Q5: How do I clean a bridge?

Brush as normal, and clean beneath the replacement tooth daily using special floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser; Dr Bilverdi will show you exactly how at your fitting. Regular hygiene visits help keep the areas you can't see healthy too.

Q6: Can I eat normally with a bridge?

Yes. Once you've adjusted, which usually takes only days, you can enjoy a full, varied diet. As with natural teeth, it's sensible to be careful with very hard or sticky foods.

Q7: Is a bridge better than a denture?

Neither is "better"; they suit different situations. A bridge is fixed, discreet and doesn't cover your palate, while a partial denture is more conservative of the neighbouring teeth and suits wider gaps. Dr Bilverdi will explain honestly which suits your mouth.

Q8: What happens if I just leave the gap?

Nothing dramatic happens overnight, but over time the neighbouring teeth can tilt into the space and the opposing tooth can over-erupt, unbalancing your bite and making future treatment more complex. It's worth understanding the risks before deciding, and that conversation is exactly what a consultation is for.

Q9: My bridge has come loose. What should I do?

Keep it safe, don't try to re-cement it yourself with household glue, and call us on 01255 422506. Re-fixed promptly, a loose bridge can often simply be cleaned and re-cemented, and acting quickly protects the supporting teeth beneath.

Q10: How much does a bridge cost?

It depends on the design and the number of teeth being replaced. You can see our current prices on our fees page, and you will always receive a full written estimate before any treatment starts.

I have been seeing Dr Bilverdi for nearly 20 years now. His care and attention to detail is first class and I have never had any trouble with his work. No filling or crown has fallen out and no treatment has had to be repeated. If you are not cleaning any areas he will point this out. A top class dentist and his assistant Hope is always very helpful and efficient.

As a very nervous patient (we're talking panic attack in the waiting room in the past) Dr. Bilverdi and his nurse have been exceptional. I'm no longer scared to go to the dentist! He has a very calming and reassuring manner and takes the time to explain everything clearly. A single-dentist practice that has been there for 26 years, with a nurse who has worked with him for 15 years, is the main reason I chose this practice. That's not to say the other practices in the area aren't good. But I found Dr Bilverdi to be outstanding in all areas. As an anxious patient, it's good to know who I'm seeing every time. It's refreshing when you call to make an appointment, and the dentist answers the phone, and then when you arrive, he is sitting at the reception desk to greet you. Had to have several injections today and can honestly say that I barely felt a thing with zero pain! The numbing spray before the injections worked brilliantly. If you are nervous about visiting a dentist, I can highly recommend Dr Bilverdi at Tender Dental Care.

I’m terrified of the dentist! This has meant that I have avoided attending pretty much all my adult life. My teeth were in an awful condition and I had to do something. Attending Tender Dental Care has been the best dental experience I’ve had, the thought, time, and care given has made a world of difference not only to my confidence in my smile but the avoidance of attending the dentist has been a complete turn around. The quality of work has been to the highest standards and the clinic is professional and warm. I cannot express how grateful I am for such brilliant care.

I was given an emergency appointment today and found everyone to be friendly and professional. Everything was explained to me clearly and honestly. I will definitely be returning to this practice in future instead of my previous dentist.

I rung around several dentists before settling on Tender Dental Care. They could see me weeks ahead of any other practice but what sold it to me was the fact that the dentist himself answered the phone and was really friendly. I was so nervous about going and actually quite embarrassed about the state of my teeth but Dr. Bilverdi was not only patient but totally non-judgemental. He explained everything that was happening and didn’t go straight in for “you need lots of fillings”, which is always a concern when you pay privately. He instead gave me a whole range of options to consider in my own time. Dr. Bilverdi really took his time with me and at no point did I feel rushed or like I couldn’t ask more questions. Hope is also lovely and the quiet, nicely decorated environment is so much nicer than the usual bustling dentist waiting room. I was the only person on site during the appointment. The price is pretty reasonable too, with each cost being broken down before you agree to it. I have finally found a dentist I trust and will absolutely not be leaving it 6 years until my next visit! I went in terrified and tearful that I was going to loose all my teeth but left feeling relieved and relaxed. I can highly recommend!
