Dental Crowns in Clacton-on-Sea

When a tooth is broken, badly worn or weakened by decay or a large filling, a crown can restore its strength and appearance for years to come. At Tender Dental Care, dental crowns in Clacton-on-Sea are planned and fitted personally by Dr Bilverdi, with each crown matched in shade and shape so it blends naturally into your smile.

If you've been told you need a crown, or you have a damaged tooth you've been putting up with, this page explains how treatment works and what to expect.

Give a damaged tooth its strength back.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a prepared tooth, covering it completely above the gum line. Think of it as a protective jacket, made to measure for your tooth, that restores the shape, strength and look of a tooth that can no longer manage on its own. A well-made crown is:

Protective

The whole biting surface is covered, shielding a weakened tooth from the forces of chewing.

Strong

A crowned tooth can bite and chew with confidence again, often for many years.

Natural-looking

Matched in shade and shape to your neighbouring teeth, a good crown is very hard to spot.

Long-lasting

With good care, crowns commonly last ten years or more, making them a sound investment in a tooth.

Crowns are made from different materials, from tooth-coloured ceramics to porcelain bonded to metal, and Dr Bilverdi will recommend the right material for your tooth, your bite and your budget, explaining the choice in plain terms.

Restoring Damaged and Broken Teeth

The most common reason for a crown: a tooth that has broken, cracked or worn down, or one where an old, large filling has left too little natural tooth to hold a new filling reliably.

Why a crown helps:
  • Rebuilds the tooth: shape and biting function are fully restored.
  • Prevents worse: covering a cracked tooth can stop the crack spreading and save the tooth.
  • Beats repeat repairs: where fillings keep failing, a crown provides a lasting solution.
  • Comfortable: a properly fitted crown feels like your own tooth.

For smaller areas of damage, a crown isn't always necessary; a filling or an inlay or onlay may restore the tooth while preserving more of it. Dr Bilverdi will always recommend the most conservative option that will genuinely last.

Protecting Teeth After Root Canal Treatment

A back tooth that has had root canal treatment becomes more brittle over time, and a crown is often recommended afterwards to protect it.

Why a crown helps:
  • Shields a brittle tooth: root-treated teeth are more prone to fracture under chewing forces.
  • Protects your investment: crowning helps ensure the root canal treatment gives you years of service.
  • Seals the tooth: a well-fitting crown helps keep bacteria out of the treated tooth.
  • Restores appearance: root-treated teeth can darken, and a crown returns a natural look.

If you've recently completed root canal treatment here or elsewhere and been advised to have the tooth crowned, don't leave it too long. An unprotected root-treated tooth that fractures can sometimes become unsaveable.

Improving a Tooth's Appearance

Where a tooth is badly discoloured, misshapen or out of proportion, and simpler cosmetic options aren't suitable, a crown can transform how it looks while strengthening it at the same time.

Why a crown helps:
  • Complete transformation: colour, shape and proportion are all corrected in one restoration.
  • Natural result: modern tooth-coloured materials mimic the translucency of real enamel.
  • Strength as well as beauty: unlike purely cosmetic treatments, a crown reinforces the tooth.
  • Blends with any plan: crowns can form part of a wider smile makeover.

Because crowning involves reshaping the natural tooth, it's not the first choice for purely cosmetic changes. Where a more conservative treatment such as composite bonding or a veneer would achieve what you want, Dr Bilverdi will say so.

Which Option Is Right for Me?

The right restoration depends on how much healthy tooth remains and what the tooth has to cope with. As a general guide:

Crown

Ideal when a tooth is significantly damaged, weakened or root treated, and needs full coverage to survive.

Filling, inlay or onlay

Ideal for smaller to medium areas of damage, where more of your natural tooth can be preserved.

Bridge

If a tooth can't be saved at all, crowns on neighbouring teeth can support a bridge to fill the gap.

The honest starting point is an examination. Dr Bilverdi will tell you plainly what your tooth needs, and just as plainly what it doesn't.

You can view our current prices on our dental treatment fees page, and a full written estimate is always provided before any treatment begins.

What to Expect: Your Treatment Journey

  1. Consultation: Dr Bilverdi examines the tooth, often with an X-ray, confirms that a crown is the right treatment, and agrees the material and shade with you. You'll receive a written plan and costs before anything begins.
  2. Preparation: with the tooth comfortably numbed, it is carefully shaped to make room for the crown.
  3. Impressions: a precise mould of the prepared tooth is taken, which the dental laboratory uses to craft your crown.
  4. Temporary crown: a temporary crown protects the tooth while your final crown is being made.
  5. Fitting: your finished crown is checked for fit, bite and appearance, adjusted if needed, and securely cemented in place.
  6. Review and aftercare: your crown is checked at your regular visits, and with good brushing, flossing and check-ups it should serve you for many years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Does having a crown fitted hurt?

No. The tooth is thoroughly numbed before preparation, so you shouldn't feel pain during treatment. Some mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards is normal and settles on its own.

Q2: How long does crown treatment take?

Treatment is usually completed over two visits a couple of weeks apart: one to prepare the tooth and take impressions, and one to fit the finished crown. You'll wear a comfortable temporary crown in between.

Q3: How long will my crown last?

With good care, crowns commonly last ten years or more, and many last considerably longer. The biggest factors are your daily brushing and flossing, regular check-ups, and being sensible with very hard foods.

Q4: Will my crown look natural?

Yes. The shade and shape are matched to your neighbouring teeth, and tooth-coloured materials are chosen for a lifelike result. On front teeth especially, a well-made crown is very difficult to spot.

Q5: Can a crowned tooth still get decay?

The crown itself can't decay, but the natural tooth beneath it can, particularly at the join near the gum line. That's why brushing, flossing and regular check-ups and hygiene visits remain essential.

Q6: What should I do if my crown comes off?

Keep the crown safe, don't try to glue it back yourself, and call us on 01255 422506. Household glues can damage the crown and the tooth. In most cases the crown can simply be cleaned and re-cemented.

Q7: What's the difference between a crown and a filling?

A filling repairs part of a tooth from within; a crown covers the whole tooth above the gum. Fillings suit smaller cavities, while crowns are for teeth too damaged or weakened for a filling to hold reliably. In between sit inlays and onlays, which Dr Bilverdi will discuss if they suit your tooth better.

Q8: Do I really need a crown after root canal treatment?

For back teeth, usually yes. Root-treated teeth become more brittle, and the heavy chewing forces on molars can fracture an unprotected tooth. A crown is the best insurance for the treatment you've already invested in.

Q9: How much does a crown cost?

It depends on the material used and the tooth being treated. You can see our current prices on our fees page, and you will always receive a full written estimate before any treatment starts.

Q10: I'm nervous about the dentist. Can you help?

Absolutely. Tender Dental Care is well known for looking after anxious patients. Dr Bilverdi works gently, explains each step as he goes, and will pause whenever you need. If you'd like to ask a question before booking, use our Ask the Dentist page.

Dr Bilverdi is absolutely fantastic - best dentist I've ever been to. He's extremely accomodating, patient and caring, and has done a fantastic job on my teeth (fillings and a crown). He always goes the extra mile and really cares about his patients. The prices are very reasonable as well. Hope, the dental nurse is also just so lovely. I cannot recommend the practice highly enough. Thank you so much Dr Bilverdi and Hope!

I rung around several dentists before settling on Tender Dental Care. They could see me weeks ahead of any other practice but what sold it to me was the fact that the dentist himself answered the phone and was really friendly. I was so nervous about going and actually quite embarrassed about the state of my teeth but Dr. Bilverdi was not only patient but totally non-judgemental. He explained everything that was happening and didn’t go straight in for “you need lots of fillings”, which is always a concern when you pay privately. He instead gave me a whole range of options to consider in my own time. Dr. Bilverdi really took his time with me and at no point did I feel rushed or like I couldn’t ask more questions. Hope is also lovely and the quiet, nicely decorated environment is so much nicer than the usual bustling dentist waiting room. I was the only person on site during the appointment. The price is pretty reasonable too, with each cost being broken down before you agree to it. I have finally found a dentist I trust and will absolutely not be leaving it 6 years until my next visit! I went in terrified and tearful that I was going to loose all my teeth but left feeling relieved and relaxed. I can highly recommend!

I have been seeing Dr Bilverdi for nearly 20 years now. His care and attention to detail is first class and I have never had any trouble with his work. No filling or crown has fallen out and no treatment has had to be repeated. If you are not cleaning any areas he will point this out. A top class dentist and his assistant Hope is always very helpful and efficient.

I’m terrified of the dentist! This has meant that I have avoided attending pretty much all my adult life. My teeth were in an awful condition and I had to do something. Attending Tender Dental Care has been the best dental experience I’ve had, the thought, time, and care given has made a world of difference not only to my confidence in my smile but the avoidance of attending the dentist has been a complete turn around. The quality of work has been to the highest standards and the clinic is professional and warm. I cannot express how grateful I am for such brilliant care.

I needed an urgent appointment because of a tooth infection. I was seen to really quickly, treated with antibiotics. The tooth was taken out a week later. I was really nervous but I was put at ease by Dr Bilverdi and his assistant. The tooth came out OK in fact I didn't even feel a thing. I recommend Tender Dental Care, as the name says, Tender care.

As a very nervous patient (we're talking panic attack in the waiting room in the past) Dr. Bilverdi and his nurse have been exceptional. I'm no longer scared to go to the dentist! He has a very calming and reassuring manner and takes the time to explain everything clearly. A single-dentist practice that has been there for 26 years, with a nurse who has worked with him for 15 years, is the main reason I chose this practice. That's not to say the other practices in the area aren't good. But I found Dr Bilverdi to be outstanding in all areas. As an anxious patient, it's good to know who I'm seeing every time. It's refreshing when you call to make an appointment, and the dentist answers the phone, and then when you arrive, he is sitting at the reception desk to greet you. Had to have several injections today and can honestly say that I barely felt a thing with zero pain! The numbing spray before the injections worked brilliantly. If you are nervous about visiting a dentist, I can highly recommend Dr Bilverdi at Tender Dental Care.
