Mouth Cancer Screening in Clacton-on-Sea

Some of the most valuable moments in dentistry are the quietest. Mouth cancer screening in Clacton-on-Sea happens at every single check-up at Tender Dental Care, for every patient, as standard: a quick, painless examination of the soft tissues of your mouth that takes moments, causes no discomfort, and, in the rare cases where it matters, can genuinely save a life.

Most screenings end exactly as they should: with nothing to report. This page explains what the screening involves, the signs worth knowing yourself, and what happens in the uncommon event that something needs a closer look.

Quick, painless, and included in every check-up.

Mouth Cancer Screening in Clacton-on-Sea at Tender Dental Care

What Is Mouth Cancer Screening?

Mouth cancer screening is a careful visual and gentle physical examination of the mouth's soft tissues, looking for any changes that deserve a specialist's assessment. At this practice it isn't an extra to request or a box to tick; it's woven into every check-up, because early detection is where the difference is made.

The screening is:

Quick

The examination takes moments, folded so naturally into your check-up that many patients don't notice it happening.

Painless

Looking, and gentle feeling, nothing more. No instruments beyond a light and a mirror, no discomfort at all.

Standard, for everyone

Every patient, every check-up, whatever your age or habits, because mouth cancer doesn't only visit the expected.

Genuinely important

Found early, mouth cancer is far more treatable, and dentists are the professionals best placed to find it early.

It's one more quiet argument for the humble check-up: alongside your teeth and gums, the appointment is watching over something bigger.

What the Screening Involves

Knowing what happens takes any mystery out of it, and there's reassuringly little to tell.

The examination, step by step:
  • The lining of your mouth: cheeks, lips, gums and the roof and floor of the mouth are examined under good light.
  • Your tongue: the top, sides and underside, places you rarely see yourself, are checked carefully.
  • A gentle feel: the jaw and neck are lightly felt for any swelling or lumps in the glands.
  • A trained eye for change: Dr Bilverdi is looking for anything that differs from your normal, ulcers that haven't healed, patches, lumps or texture changes.

That last point is where seeing the same dentist every visit quietly earns its keep: a dentist who has examined your mouth twenty times knows your normal, and change from normal is exactly what screening exists to spot.

Knowing the Signs Yourself

Between check-ups, your own awareness is part of the safety net, and the signs are worth knowing calmly rather than anxiously.

What deserves a prompt look:
  • An ulcer that doesn't heal: mouth ulcers are common and almost always harmless, but one that hasn't healed within three weeks should be checked.
  • Patches: red, white or mixed patches on the tongue, gums or lining of the mouth that don't resolve.
  • Lumps or thickening: in the mouth, on the lip, or in the neck, especially any that persist or grow.
  • Persistent oddities: unexplained numbness, ongoing hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing that doesn't clear up.

The three-week rule is the one to remember: most changes in the mouth sort themselves out within three weeks, and the great majority of those that don't still turn out to be harmless. Checking isn't expecting the worst; it's how you make sure of the best. If something on this list sounds familiar, call us on 01255 422506 and we'll take a proper look promptly.

Understanding Your Risk

Risk isn't destiny in either direction: higher-risk patients mostly stay well, and mouth cancer sometimes visits people with no risk factors at all, which is why screening here is universal.

What's known about the risk factors:
  • Smoking: the leading risk factor, and one of the strongest reasons this practice offers smoking cessation support.
  • Alcohol: heavy drinking raises risk on its own, and multiplies it when combined with smoking.
  • HPV: the human papillomavirus is an increasingly recognised factor, particularly in cancers towards the back of the mouth and throat, including in younger people.
  • Sun and age: strong sun exposure plays a role in lip cancer, and risk rises with age, though no age is exempt.

None of this is listed to worry you; it's listed because informed is safer than unaware. Whatever your risk profile, your screening happens at every check-up regardless, and if reducing a risk factor is on your mind, from smoking to anything else, the conversation here is judgement-free.

Which of These Sounds Like You?

Three starting points, each with a clear next step:

Due a check-up

Your screening is already included: book your check-up and it happens as standard, no need to ask.

Noticed something

An ulcer past three weeks, a patch or a lump: don't sit with the worry. Call us and we'll look promptly; most findings are harmless, and knowing beats wondering.

Higher risk, wanting vigilance

If you smoke or drink heavily, regular check-ups matter even more, and the screening within them is watching with you.

Whichever applies, the screening itself is identical: quick, painless, thorough, and carried out by a dentist who knows your mouth.

You can view our current prices on our dental treatment fees page, and a full written estimate is always provided before any treatment begins.

What to Expect: Screening at Your Check-Up

Nothing to book, nothing to ask: your screening is built into every check-up as standard, so simply attending is the whole of your job.

  1. The look: under good light, the soft tissues of your mouth, cheeks, lips, gums, tongue and the roof and floor of the mouth, are examined methodically.
  2. The gentle feel: the jaw and neck are lightly checked for any swelling in the glands. It takes moments and feels like nothing at all.
  3. The usual outcome: all clear. Most screenings end in quiet reassurance, and that reassurance is renewed at every visit.
  4. If something needs a second look: you'll be told calmly and plainly what's been seen and why it deserves attention. Most such findings prove entirely harmless; some are simply monitored and re-checked at a set interval.
  5. If a specialist should see it: where a change genuinely warrants expert assessment, an urgent hospital referral is made promptly, you're told exactly what to expect, and this practice stays alongside you throughout. Screening doesn't diagnose; it makes sure the right eyes see the right things, fast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What does mouth cancer screening involve? Does it hurt?

A careful look at the soft tissues of your mouth, cheeks, lips, gums, tongue, and the roof and floor of the mouth, plus a gentle feel of the jaw and neck. No instruments beyond a light and mirror, no discomfort whatsoever, and it takes moments. Many patients only know it's happened because we mention it.

Q2: How often should I be screened?

At every check-up, which at this practice happens automatically: screening is built in as standard rather than offered on request. It's one more reason the regular check-up rhythm matters; each visit quietly renews the reassurance.

Q3: What signs should I watch for myself between visits?

The main ones: an ulcer that hasn't healed within three weeks, red or white patches that persist, lumps or thickened areas in the mouth or neck, and lasting unexplained numbness, hoarseness or difficulty swallowing. Most of these turn out to be harmless; the point of knowing them is simply to get checked promptly rather than to worry.

Q4: I've found an ulcer. Should I be worried?

Almost certainly not: mouth ulcers are extremely common and the overwhelming majority heal on their own within a couple of weeks. The three-week rule is your guide: an ulcer still present after three weeks should be looked at, not because it's probably serious, but because making sure is quick, easy and settles the matter. Call us and we'll see you promptly.

Q5: Who gets mouth cancer? Am I at risk?

Smoking is the leading risk factor, heavy alcohol use raises risk and multiplies it alongside smoking, HPV is an increasingly recognised factor including in younger people, and risk rises with age. But mouth cancer doesn't restrict itself to the expected, which is exactly why screening here covers every patient at every check-up, whatever their profile.

Q6: Can young people and non-smokers really get mouth cancer?

Yes, less commonly, but genuinely, and cases linked to HPV in particular have been rising in younger age groups. It's precisely why this practice screens universally rather than profiling: assumptions are how early signs get missed, and moments of looking cost nothing.

Q7: What happens if you find something during my screening?

First, calm and clarity: you'll be shown or told exactly what's been seen and what it likely is, and most findings prove entirely harmless, ulcers, friction marks, benign patches. Some are simply monitored and re-checked after a set interval. Where a change genuinely warrants expert assessment, an urgent hospital referral is made promptly, and we stay alongside you throughout. What screening never does is leave you wondering.

Q8: Does the screening cost extra?

No; it's included as a standard part of every check-up rather than a separate item. Your check-up fee covers it, and our fees are always visible on our fees page. Peace of mind, in this case, comes built in.

Q9: How can I check my own mouth at home?

Once a month, in good light with a mirror: look at your lips inside and out, your gums, the roof of your mouth, your cheeks, and your tongue, top, sides and underneath, and feel gently along your jaw and neck. You're not diagnosing anything; you're learning your mouth's normal, so that anything new stands out and gets checked. Two minutes, once a month, is the whole routine.

Q10: I'm worried about something in my mouth and nervous about coming in. What should I do?

Come in anyway, and quickly, because in the overwhelming majority of cases the appointment ends with relief, and in the rare case it doesn't, speed is your best friend. Worry grows in the dark; a five-minute look turns the light on. If it helps to ask a question first, our Ask the Dentist page is there, but please don't let nerves buy the worry more time. Call 01255 422506 and let's settle it.

Dr Bilverdi is absolutely fantastic - best dentist I've ever been to. He's extremely accomodating, patient and caring, and has done a fantastic job on my teeth (fillings and a crown). He always goes the extra mile and really cares about his patients. The prices are very reasonable as well. Hope, the dental nurse is also just so lovely. I cannot recommend the practice highly enough. Thank you so much Dr Bilverdi and Hope!

I rung around several dentists before settling on Tender Dental Care. They could see me weeks ahead of any other practice but what sold it to me was the fact that the dentist himself answered the phone and was really friendly. I was so nervous about going and actually quite embarrassed about the state of my teeth but Dr. Bilverdi was not only patient but totally non-judgemental. He explained everything that was happening and didn’t go straight in for “you need lots of fillings”, which is always a concern when you pay privately. He instead gave me a whole range of options to consider in my own time. Dr. Bilverdi really took his time with me and at no point did I feel rushed or like I couldn’t ask more questions. Hope is also lovely and the quiet, nicely decorated environment is so much nicer than the usual bustling dentist waiting room. I was the only person on site during the appointment. The price is pretty reasonable too, with each cost being broken down before you agree to it. I have finally found a dentist I trust and will absolutely not be leaving it 6 years until my next visit! I went in terrified and tearful that I was going to loose all my teeth but left feeling relieved and relaxed. I can highly recommend!

I’m terrified of the dentist! This has meant that I have avoided attending pretty much all my adult life. My teeth were in an awful condition and I had to do something. Attending Tender Dental Care has been the best dental experience I’ve had, the thought, time, and care given has made a world of difference not only to my confidence in my smile but the avoidance of attending the dentist has been a complete turn around. The quality of work has been to the highest standards and the clinic is professional and warm. I cannot express how grateful I am for such brilliant care.

I have been seeing Dr Bilverdi for nearly 20 years now. His care and attention to detail is first class and I have never had any trouble with his work. No filling or crown has fallen out and no treatment has had to be repeated. If you are not cleaning any areas he will point this out. A top class dentist and his assistant Hope is always very helpful and efficient.

As a very nervous patient (we're talking panic attack in the waiting room in the past) Dr. Bilverdi and his nurse have been exceptional. I'm no longer scared to go to the dentist! He has a very calming and reassuring manner and takes the time to explain everything clearly. A single-dentist practice that has been there for 26 years, with a nurse who has worked with him for 15 years, is the main reason I chose this practice. That's not to say the other practices in the area aren't good. But I found Dr Bilverdi to be outstanding in all areas. As an anxious patient, it's good to know who I'm seeing every time. It's refreshing when you call to make an appointment, and the dentist answers the phone, and then when you arrive, he is sitting at the reception desk to greet you. Had to have several injections today and can honestly say that I barely felt a thing with zero pain! The numbing spray before the injections worked brilliantly. If you are nervous about visiting a dentist, I can highly recommend Dr Bilverdi at Tender Dental Care.
