Adults today have genuine choice, and the right one depends on your teeth rather than on fashion.
Clear aligners
Transparent, removable trays worn around 20 to 22 hours a day, changed every week or two as your teeth move. They are the most discreet option available and come out for meals and brushing.
Tooth-coloured fixed braces
Fixed braces using ceramic or tooth-coloured brackets rather than metal, often with tooth-coloured wires. They stay on throughout treatment but blend far better than traditional metal.
Front-teeth systems

What people actually notice
In practical terms, at normal conversational distance:
- Clear aligners: most people genuinely do not spot them. Someone looking closely in bright light may notice a faint outline at the gum line, but casual observers rarely do. Plenty of patients complete an entire treatment without colleagues realising.
- Tooth-coloured fixed braces: noticeable if someone is looking at your teeth, considerably less so than metal. In photographs they are far less conspicuous than the braces most adults remember.
One detail worth knowing about aligners: some treatments use small tooth-coloured attachments bonded to certain teeth to help particular movements. They are subtle and shade-matched, but they are the part most likely to be noticed, so it is fair to ask at your consultation whether your plan needs them.
Will it affect my speech?
With clear aligners, many people notice a very slight lisp for the first two or three days while the tongue adjusts to the trays. It fades quickly and is usually far more noticeable to you than to anyone else.
Fixed braces can feel odd against the lips and cheeks for a few days, and speech settles within a similar timeframe.
What about work, photographs and social life?
This is the real question behind the question, and it is a fair one. Adults ask because they have client meetings, presentations, weddings and photographs in the diary.
Aligners have a practical advantage here: they are removable. Most orthodontic guidance is that they should be worn 20 to 22 hours a day, which leaves a genuine margin for the occasional important occasion, provided it stays occasional. Taking them out for a wedding speech is fine; taking them out every evening will simply slow your treatment down.
Fixed braces do not come out, but in photographs tooth-coloured brackets are considerably less conspicuous than people fear, particularly at anything other than close range.
Which option suits which problem?
Broadly:
- Mild crowding or spacing in the front teeth: a focused front-teeth system is often quickest and most economical.
- Broader crowding, rotation or movement beyond the front six: clear aligners have the wider scope.
- More complex bite corrections: fixed braces still handle certain movements most reliably.

The honest limits
Three things I would want you to know before starting.
Discreet does not mean effortless. Aligners only work when worn, and the 20 to 22 hour requirement is real. The commonest reason aligner treatment disappoints is inconsistent wear.
Retainers are for life. Teeth drift back towards their original positions without retention, however they were straightened. Retainers, usually worn at night, are the price of keeping your result. Anyone who glosses over this is not doing you a favour.
Not every case suits every system. A proper assessment of your teeth, gums and bite comes first, and if a discreet option will not achieve what you want, you deserve to hear that rather than discover it later.
