Healing After Tooth Extraction: How Long Does It Take?

by Dr. Bilverdi | 13/08/2026 | Tooth Extractions

Healing after tooth extraction happens in stages, and knowing the timeline takes most of the worry out of it. The socket closes over within a week or two, the gum surface heals within a month, and the bone underneath quietly fills in over several months. Most people are back to normal eating within days rather than weeks.

On this page

The healing timeline, day by day

  • First 24 hours: a blood clot forms in the socket. This is the single most important part of healing, and protecting it is your only real job.
  • Days two to three: some swelling and tenderness, usually peaking around day two then easing. Soft food is comfortable.
  • Days three to seven: discomfort settles noticeably. Gum tissue begins closing over the socket.
  • Weeks one to two: the socket has largely closed. Most people are eating fairly normally.
  • Weeks three to four: the gum surface is essentially healed.
  • Months two to six: bone fills in beneath the gum, invisibly. You feel nothing, but this is why replacement teeth are usually planned rather than rushed.

Larger or surgical extractions naturally take a little longer at each stage, and you will be told what to expect for yours.

The first 24 hours matter most

Everything about early healing depends on that blood clot staying put. It is nature’s dressing, and dislodging it exposes the bone beneath, which is both painful and slower to heal.

So for the first day:

  1. Do not rinse, spit or swill. Not even gently. This is the rule people most often break.
  2. Do not smoke. The suction and the chemicals both work against you.
  3. Avoid straws for the same reason.
  4. Skip hot drinks and alcohol.
  5. Leave the socket alone. No tongue-poking, however tempting.

From the following day, gentle warm salt-water rinses after meals help keep the area clean, and you can return to brushing your other teeth normally straight away.

How much discomfort is normal?

Mild to moderate soreness for two or three days, easing steadily, is entirely typical, and ordinary painkillers taken as the packet directs handle it well for most people. Some swelling and a little jaw stiffness is normal too, particularly after a more involved extraction.

The pattern matters more than the level. Discomfort should improve day by day. Pain that increases after day two or three, rather than settling, is the thing to tell us about.

What helps you heal faster

  • Rest for the first day. Skip the gym and heavy lifting, which raise blood pressure and can disturb the clot.
  • Sleep propped up on an extra pillow for the first night or two.
  • Eat soft, cool or lukewarm food and chew on the other side.
  • Stay hydrated, sipping rather than using a straw.
  • Salt-water rinses from day two, gently, after meals.
  • Keep the rest of your mouth clean. Brush as normal everywhere else.

What slows healing down

Smoking is by a distance the biggest factor, and the main cause of dry socket. If you have ever considered stopping, an extraction is a genuinely good moment, and our page on smoking cessation explains the support available.

Other factors include diabetes, particularly if blood sugar control is unsettled, certain medications, and simply doing too much too soon. Age plays a modest part, though less than people assume.

Warning signs worth ringing about

Contact us if you notice:

  • Pain that worsens after day two or three, particularly a deep ache spreading towards the ear, which can indicate dry socket
  • Bleeding that will not settle after twenty minutes of firm biting on a clean gauze pad
  • Swelling that increases after day three rather than reducing
  • Fever, or feeling generally unwell
  • A bad taste or smell that persists
  • Numbness that has not resolved well after the anaesthetic should have worn off

Most of these are uncommon and easily dealt with when caught early. Ring us on 01255 422506 rather than waiting to see.

What happens to the gap afterwards

Once healing is complete, there is the question of whether to fill the space. For an unseen back tooth, leaving it can be perfectly reasonable. Elsewhere, neighbouring teeth may drift into the gap over time, which unbalances the bite.

Options include a fixed bridge or a partial denture, and where several teeth are removed together, an immediate denture can be fitted on the day so you are never without teeth. Our page on tooth extractions covers the whole process, and if a tooth is troubling you but has not yet been removed, root canal treatment can often save it.

The NHS guidance on having a tooth removed covers the general aftercare well.

The bottom line

Healing after tooth extraction takes about a week for the socket to close over and a month for the gum to heal fully, with bone filling in quietly for months afterwards. Protect the clot for the first 24 hours, keep the area clean from day two, and let us know if pain increases rather than eases.

If you have had an extraction and something does not feel right, ring us on 01255 422506. Our posts on tooth infections and getting used to new dentures cover what often comes before and after.

I needed an urgent appointment because of a tooth infection. I was seen to really quickly, treated with antibiotics. The tooth was taken out a week later. I was really nervous but I was put at ease by Dr Bilverdi and his assistant. The tooth came out OK in fact I didn't even feel a thing. I recommend Tender Dental Care, as the name says, Tender care.

I have been a patient here for a few years now, and have always had an excellent experience! My young children attend with me, they are treated with kindness and sincerity and have no concerns about visiting the dentist. Always super clean, all of the equipment, as well as the surgery itself are maintained to a very high standard. Dr Bilverdi and Hope are clearly very experienced and provide a great service.

As a very nervous patient (we're talking panic attack in the waiting room in the past) Dr. Bilverdi and his nurse have been exceptional. I'm no longer scared to go to the dentist! He has a very calming and reassuring manner and takes the time to explain everything clearly. A single-dentist practice that has been there for 26 years, with a nurse who has worked with him for 15 years, is the main reason I chose this practice. That's not to say the other practices in the area aren't good. But I found Dr Bilverdi to be outstanding in all areas. As an anxious patient, it's good to know who I'm seeing every time. It's refreshing when you call to make an appointment, and the dentist answers the phone, and then when you arrive, he is sitting at the reception desk to greet you. Had to have several injections today and can honestly say that I barely felt a thing with zero pain! The numbing spray before the injections worked brilliantly. If you are nervous about visiting a dentist, I can highly recommend Dr Bilverdi at Tender Dental Care.

I’m terrified of the dentist! This has meant that I have avoided attending pretty much all my adult life. My teeth were in an awful condition and I had to do something. Attending Tender Dental Care has been the best dental experience I’ve had, the thought, time, and care given has made a world of difference not only to my confidence in my smile but the avoidance of attending the dentist has been a complete turn around. The quality of work has been to the highest standards and the clinic is professional and warm. I cannot express how grateful I am for such brilliant care.

Dr Bilverdi is absolutely fantastic - best dentist I've ever been to. He's extremely accomodating, patient and caring, and has done a fantastic job on my teeth (fillings and a crown). He always goes the extra mile and really cares about his patients. The prices are very reasonable as well. Hope, the dental nurse is also just so lovely. I cannot recommend the practice highly enough. Thank you so much Dr Bilverdi and Hope!

I rung around several dentists before settling on Tender Dental Care. They could see me weeks ahead of any other practice but what sold it to me was the fact that the dentist himself answered the phone and was really friendly. I was so nervous about going and actually quite embarrassed about the state of my teeth but Dr. Bilverdi was not only patient but totally non-judgemental. He explained everything that was happening and didn’t go straight in for “you need lots of fillings”, which is always a concern when you pay privately. He instead gave me a whole range of options to consider in my own time. Dr. Bilverdi really took his time with me and at no point did I feel rushed or like I couldn’t ask more questions. Hope is also lovely and the quiet, nicely decorated environment is so much nicer than the usual bustling dentist waiting room. I was the only person on site during the appointment. The price is pretty reasonable too, with each cost being broken down before you agree to it. I have finally found a dentist I trust and will absolutely not be leaving it 6 years until my next visit! I went in terrified and tearful that I was going to loose all my teeth but left feeling relieved and relaxed. I can highly recommend!

I have been seeing Dr Bilverdi for nearly 20 years now. His care and attention to detail is first class and I have never had any trouble with his work. No filling or crown has fallen out and no treatment has had to be repeated. If you are not cleaning any areas he will point this out. A top class dentist and his assistant Hope is always very helpful and efficient.
