It is one of the most common questions asked in the chair, usually just as the polishing finishes: how long do white fillings last? The honest answer is that most last somewhere between five and ten years, and often a good deal longer, but the range is wide for a reason. Your filling’s lifespan depends less on the material and more on where it sits in your mouth, how big it is, and what you do with it every day.

How long do white fillings last on average?
Modern white fillings are made from composite, a tooth-coloured material bonded directly to your tooth and hardened with a curing light. A small composite filling in a front tooth, doing gentle work, can quite happily serve for a decade or more. A large filling in a back molar, absorbing the force of every meal, is working far harder and may want replacing sooner.
As a rough guide:
- Small fillings: often ten years or more, sometimes considerably longer.
- Medium fillings: commonly around seven to ten years.
- Large fillings in back teeth: often five years or so, because they take the heaviest load.
These are averages rather than expiry dates. I regularly see fillings comfortably outliving their predicted lifespan, and occasionally one that fails early because of a habit nobody had spotted.
What shortens the life of a filling?
Fillings rarely fail out of the blue. Usually something has been quietly working against them.
Grinding and clenching
This is the biggest culprit I see. Night-time grinding applies forces far beyond normal chewing, and it wears fillings down and chips their edges. Most people who grind have no idea they do it, which is why worn fillings are often the first clue. If that sounds familiar, a custom night guard protects both your fillings and your natural teeth.
Very hard or sticky foods
Ice, boiled sweets, nut shells and the occasional olive stone all take their toll. So does using your teeth to open packets, which I would gently ask you to stop doing.
Decay around the edges
The filling itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth around it certainly can. When plaque gathers at the margin where filling meets tooth, decay creeps in underneath, and the filling has to be replaced to deal with it.
Size, and the tooth’s own strength
The larger the filling, the less natural tooth remains to support it. Once a tooth is carrying more filling than tooth, a filling stops being the right answer at all, and something stronger is needed.
How to make your white fillings last longer
The good news is that most of what extends a filling’s life is entirely within your control.
- Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, angling the bristles towards the gum line where the filling meets the tooth.
- Clean between your teeth every day with floss or interdental brushes. The margins between teeth are where new decay most often begins.
- Keep your regular check-ups. A filling starting to fail is far easier to deal with before it causes pain, and I can usually see the early signs long before you feel anything.
- Wear a night guard if you grind. It is the single most effective protection for anyone who clenches in their sleep.
- Be sensible with hard foods, and never use your teeth as tools.

How do I know when a filling needs replacing?
Sometimes there is an obvious sign, and sometimes there is nothing at all. Things worth mentioning to your dentist include:
- Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet things that lingers rather than passing quickly
- A rough edge you can feel with your tongue
- Food catching in a particular spot after meals
- A dull ache when you bite down on that tooth
- A visible crack, chip or dark line at the edge of the filling
Equally, plenty of failing fillings give no warning whatsoever, which is precisely why we check them at every appointment rather than waiting for symptoms.
What happens when a filling has reached the end?
Usually the answer is simple: the old filling comes out, any decay underneath is cleaned away, and a new one goes in. That is a single, comfortable visit.
Occasionally, though, the tooth has been filled and refilled so many times that there is not enough healthy structure left to hold another one reliably. At that point I would talk to you about something stronger. An inlay or onlay is a custom-made piece bonded into the tooth, which handles heavy chewing far better than a large filling. Where a tooth is more seriously weakened, a crown covers and protects what remains.
I always aim for the most conservative option that will genuinely last. Replacing a large filling with yet another large filling can feel like the cheaper choice on the day, but if it fails again in two years it has not saved you anything.
Are white fillings less durable than metal ones?
This comes up often, usually from patients who remember amalgam lasting decades. Modern composites have improved enormously and are now used routinely in back teeth as well as front. For most everyday fillings the difference in lifespan is far smaller than it once was, and the aesthetic advantage is considerable.
What has not changed is the physics. Any filling, of any material, has limits once it becomes large enough, and that is a question about the tooth rather than about the material in it.

Most white fillings last five to ten years, many last longer, and how you look after them makes more difference than anything else. Brush and clean between your teeth daily, protect them if you grind, and keep your check-ups so small problems are caught while they are still small.
