A bridge restores your smile and your bite, and once it settles in most people forget it is there. The one thing that does need a little learning is how to clean under a dental bridge, because the replacement tooth sits above your gum rather than growing out of it, and ordinary flossing cannot get beneath it.
Ten minutes of practice now will protect your bridge for years, so it is worth getting right.

Why cleaning under a bridge matters so much
A bridge is supported by the teeth either side of the gap. Those supporting teeth, and the gum beneath the false tooth, are where all the risk sits. Plaque gathers in the space under the replacement tooth, and if it stays there it causes gum inflammation and decay at the margins of the supporting teeth.
Put simply: bridges do not fail because the bridge wears out. They fail because the teeth holding them up develop problems. Cleaning underneath is how you prevent that.
How to clean under a dental bridge: your options
Interdental brushes
These are small tapered brushes on a handle, and for most people they are the easiest and most effective option. You slide the brush horizontally into the space beneath the false tooth and work it gently back and forth, then repeat from the other side.
The critical detail is size. A brush that is too small skims through without touching anything; one too large will not pass. I will show you which sizes fit your particular bridge, and it may well be more than one size for different spaces.
A floss threader with regular floss
A floss threader is a flexible plastic loop, rather like a needle threader. You thread floss through the loop, pass the threader through the space beneath the bridge, then pull the floss through and work it along the underside of the false tooth and against each supporting tooth.
It sounds fiddly, and for the first few days it is. Most people have it down to under a minute within a fortnight.
Superfloss
Superfloss is a purpose-made product with three sections: a stiffened end that threads through like a needle, a spongy middle section that cleans the wider space under the bridge, and ordinary floss at the other end. It removes the need for a separate threader and many bridge wearers find it the simplest option of all.
A water flosser
A water flosser directs a fine jet of water into the space, flushing out debris. It is quick, comfortable, and particularly helpful if dexterity is limited or the space is awkward to reach.
One honest caveat: a water flosser is an excellent addition, but on its own it does not disturb established plaque as effectively as a brush or floss physically wiping the surface. Ideally use it alongside one of the methods above rather than instead of them.
How often should you do it?
Once a day, every day. Evening tends to work best, since it clears the day’s debris before the long overnight stretch when saliva flow slows.
Brush normally twice a day as well. Cleaning under the bridge is an addition to your routine, not a replacement for any of it.
Signs something is not right
Mention any of these to your dentist promptly:
- Gums that bleed around the bridge when you clean
- Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in that area
- Tenderness or swelling around a supporting tooth
- Any movement in the bridge, however slight
- Food packing under the bridge in a way it did not before
Bleeding when you first start cleaning underneath is fairly common and usually settles within a week or two as the gum recovers. Bleeding that persists beyond that deserves a look.
Do not forget the professional side
Home cleaning does most of the work, but not all of it. At your check-ups the bridge is examined, its margins checked, and the supporting teeth assessed. Hygiene visits clean the areas your routine cannot reach and pick up early gum changes before you would notice them.

What if cleaning is genuinely difficult?
Tell me. Sometimes the design of the bridge, or reduced dexterity in the hands, makes a particular method impractical, and there is nearly always an alternative worth trying. A bridge you can actually clean is far better than a theoretically ideal routine you cannot manage.

The short answer
Clean under your bridge once a day using interdental brushes, a floss threader, superfloss or a water flosser, keep brushing twice daily, and keep your check-ups. Do that and a well-made bridge will serve you for a decade or more.
