It is one of the most common questions denture wearers ask, and often one they are slightly embarrassed to raise, having been doing it for years. Should you sleep in your dentures? The general advice is no, and the reasons are more persuasive than most people expect.
There are exceptions, and I will come to those.

The general advice
Take your dentures out at night, clean them, and store them in water or cleaning solution until morning. That is the standard recommendation and it holds for most wearers.
Your gums spend all day bearing pressure they were never designed for, since they are soft tissue doing a job that used to belong to teeth and roots. Overnight is their only opportunity to recover.
Why taking them out matters
- Your gums get a rest. Continuous pressure with no recovery period leads to soreness, inflammation and, over time, faster changes in the underlying tissue.
- Saliva can reach the tissue underneath. A denture covers the gums and, for an upper denture, most of the palate, sealing them off from saliva’s natural cleansing and protective action.
- It reduces infection risk, which is the big one and deserves its own section.
- It is safer. A denture that becomes loose during sleep is an unnecessary hazard, particularly for anyone with a partial denture.
Denture stomatitis, the common consequence
This is the practical reason the advice exists. Denture stomatitis is an inflammation of the tissue under a denture, most often caused by a yeast called candida, and wearing dentures overnight is one of its main risk factors.
Signs are usually redness of the palate or gum exactly matching the outline of the denture, sometimes soreness or a burning sensation, and occasionally cracking at the corners of the mouth.
Curiously, plenty of people have it without symptoms and only discover it at a check-up. It is treatable, and the treatment usually involves better denture hygiene and leaving them out at night, so prevention and cure look much the same.

The bone argument
Bone shrinks after teeth are removed, and continuous pressure from a denture worn twenty-four hours a day may accelerate that process, particularly where the denture no longer fits evenly.
Faster bone loss means the denture loosens sooner, which means more pressure in the wrong places, which is a loop worth avoiding. Our post on why dentures become loose explains the underlying process, and if yours have already loosened, a reline is usually the answer.
When wearing them overnight is reasonable
Being practical, there are situations where it is understandable.
Immediately after extractions. An immediate denture is often worn continuously at first, including overnight, because it acts as a dressing over the healing gums. Your dentist will tell you when to start leaving it out, and you should follow that instruction rather than this article.
Occasional social situations. A night away, staying with people, hospital stays. Understandable, and an occasional night does no lasting harm.
Where removal genuinely is not practical, for example due to dexterity difficulties or certain care situations. Here the answer is not to insist, but to be particularly rigorous about cleaning and to have the fit and tissues checked more regularly.
If you have been wearing them overnight for years and everything is comfortable, do not panic. Do mention it at your next appointment so the tissue underneath can be checked, and consider building the habit gradually.
How to store them overnight
The essential point is that dentures must not dry out. Acrylic can distort if allowed to dry, and a distorted denture no longer fits.
- Store in cool water or a denture cleaning solution, in a covered container.
- Never in hot water, which warps them.
- Change the water daily.
- Keep the container somewhere safe. Dentures left on a bedside table or wrapped in tissue get knocked, thrown away or found by pets, all of which happen more often than you would think.
- Check the solution suits your denture, particularly if it has metal parts, since some soaking solutions can affect them.
A simple nightly routine
- Take the dentures out and rinse them under cool water.
- Brush them with a soft brush and denture cleaner, not ordinary toothpaste, which is abrasive. Do this over a folded towel or a basin of water so a slip does not become a breakage.
- Rinse your mouth, and gently brush your gums, palate and tongue with a soft brush. This is often skipped and it matters, both for the tissue and for fresh breath.
- Brush any remaining natural teeth as normal.
- Place the dentures in their container with fresh cool water or solution.

What to take away
Take your dentures out overnight where you can. It lets your gums recover, allows saliva to reach the tissue underneath, reduces the risk of denture stomatitis, and may help slow bone loss. Store them in cool water so they do not dry out and distort, and clean your gums and tongue while they are out.
