A chipped front tooth has a way of dominating your attention. You feel it with your tongue constantly, you notice it in every photograph, and you start smiling with your mouth closed. The good news is that you can usually fix a chipped front tooth in a single visit, frequently without a drill and often without an injection.

The short answer
For most small to moderate chips, yes. Composite bonding rebuilds the missing corner or edge using tooth-coloured material applied directly to your tooth, shaped by hand, hardened with a curing light and polished until it disappears.
Start to finish, a single chip typically takes somewhere around half an hour to an hour. You walk in with the chip and out with it gone.
What actually happens at the appointment
- Examination. The tooth is checked to confirm the chip is confined to the enamel and outer tooth, with no crack running deeper and no nerve involvement.
- Shade matching. The composite is matched to your tooth in natural light. Teeth are rarely one flat colour, so more than one shade may be used for a convincing result.
- Surface preparation. The tooth is cleaned and conditioned with a mild gel so the composite bonds properly. In most cases there is no drilling at this stage.
- Sculpting. The composite is applied in fine layers and shaped by hand to rebuild the missing edge, each layer set instantly with a curing light.
- Shaping and polishing. The repair is refined, your bite checked, and the surface polished to a natural gloss.

Does it hurt?
Usually there is nothing to feel. Because there is typically no drilling, most chip repairs are done without any anaesthetic at all, and patients often compare the appointment to having a manicure rather than dental treatment.
If a particular tooth needs more preparation, or if it is sensitive, numbing is available and there is no reason to be stoic about it.
Will it look natural?
Done carefully, yes, and this is where unhurried work pays off. Getting a repair to disappear involves matching not just the colour but the translucency at the edge of the tooth, the surface texture, and the way light passes through natural enamel.
That is craftsmanship rather than technology, and it is worth allowing proper time for. A rushed bonding looks like a repair; a carefully sculpted one is genuinely difficult to spot, even for the person who owns it.
When one visit is not enough
A few situations need more:
- A large break involving a substantial part of the tooth, which may need a veneer or a crown for adequate strength.
- A chip exposing the nerve, which needs root canal treatment before the tooth is rebuilt.
- A crack running into the root, which changes the outlook considerably.
- Where you also want whitening. Whiten first, then match the bonding to your final shade, since composite does not lighten afterwards.
- Where grinding caused it, in which case a night guard should be part of the plan, or the repair will simply chip again.

If you have just chipped a tooth
- Keep any fragment in milk or saline. Occasionally a clean break can be bonded back into place.
- Rinse gently with warm water.
- Ring us, even if it is not hurting. Exposed inner tooth picks up decay and sensitivity quickly, and cracks tend to travel.
- Cover a sharp edge temporarily with orthodontic wax or sugar-free gum if it is cutting your tongue or lip.
- Avoid biting on that tooth until it has been seen.

How long will the repair last?
Typically five to eight years, sometimes longer, depending on where it sits and what you ask of it.
What shortens it: biting nails, opening packets with your teeth, night-time grinding, and chewing hard items. What extends it: avoiding all of the above, cleaning well, keeping hygiene appointments so the polish is refreshed, and wearing a night guard if you clench.
And when it does eventually chip or dull, repair is straightforward and affordable, because new composite bonds happily to old. That forgiving quality is one of bonding’s genuine advantages.
