Am I too old for braces is a question I hear from patients in their forties, fifties, sixties and beyond, usually with a slightly apologetic tone. The answer is straightforward: no. Teeth move at any age, and adults are now the fastest-growing group of orthodontic patients, largely because modern treatment is so much more discreet than the braces people remember.

Why there is no upper age limit
Teeth move through bone in response to gentle sustained pressure, and that biological process does not switch off with age. A sixty-year-old’s teeth respond to orthodontic force in the same way a sixteen-year-old’s do.
Adult teeth do generally move a little more slowly, since bone remodelling is less rapid than in a growing child, so treatment may take somewhat longer. That is a difference in timescale, not in possibility.
What actually matters instead of age
Four things, none of which is your birthday:
- Gum health. This is the important one. Moving teeth in gums affected by active gum disease can accelerate bone loss. Any gum problems are treated and stabilised first, and our post on whether gum disease is reversible explains why this matters so much.
- Bone support. Teeth need adequate bone around them. Where support is reduced, treatment can often still proceed, with gentler forces and careful monitoring.
- Existing dental work. Crowns, bridges and fillings all affect planning, though rarely prevent treatment.
- Sound teeth and roots, which an examination and X-rays establish.
An adult who looks after their gums is frequently a better orthodontic patient than a teenager who does not.
How adult treatment differs
A few practical differences worth knowing.
Treatment can take a little longer. Adults sometimes have missing teeth or existing dental work that needs planning around. And because adult jaws are no longer growing, certain skeletal bite problems that could be guided in a child cannot be corrected the same way, which occasionally limits what is achievable.
On the other hand, adults are considerably better patients. Aligners only work when worn, and adults wear them.
The options adults usually choose
Clear aligners. Transparent removable trays, worn around 20 to 22 hours a day. The most discreet option, and the one most adults choose. Our page on teeth straightening explains the systems available.

Tooth-coloured fixed braces. Ceramic brackets rather than metal, for cases needing the reliability of a fixed appliance.

Why adults do it
The reasons are more varied than simple vanity.
Some have wanted it since childhood and could never afford it. Some had braces as teenagers, never wore the retainers, and have watched their teeth drift back. Some have crowding that makes cleaning genuinely difficult, which contributes to gum disease and decay. And some are planning other cosmetic work and want the foundations right first, which is a sensible order, as our post on the right order of cosmetic treatments explains.
All perfectly good reasons, including the purely cosmetic one.
Is it worth it at this stage of life?
That is genuinely your call, not mine, but two thoughts.
First, the time passes anyway. A year of aligner treatment sounds long until you consider that the year happens regardless, and you can arrive at the end of it with straighter teeth or without.
Second, there are practical benefits beyond appearance. Crowded and overlapping teeth are harder to clean, and easier cleaning means healthier gums, which matters increasingly as we get older.
Equally, if your teeth are healthy and the crookedness has never genuinely bothered you, there is no obligation whatsoever. Nobody should be talked into orthodontics.
The lifelong bit
Teeth drift back without retention, at any age, and adult teeth are, if anything, keener to. Retainers worn nightly are permanent, and that should be part of the conversation before treatment rather than a surprise afterwards.
Many adults seeking treatment are in that position precisely because they were not told this the first time round.
