Haven’t Been to the Dentist in Years? Here’s What Happens Now

by Dr. Bilverdi | 13/08/2026 | Dental Check-Up

If you haven’t been to the dentist in years, the hardest part is almost certainly the phone call rather than the appointment. I say that as someone who has met a great many people in exactly your position, and I have yet to meet one who regretted coming back.

Here is honestly what happens, so there are no surprises.

On this page

First, the thing you actually want to know

You will not be judged, told off, or made to feel foolish. Not gently, not by implication, not at all.

People stop going to the dentist for entirely human reasons: fear after a bad experience, money, illness, bereavement, moving house, a practice closing, or simply a gap that grew longer and became harder to break. Every one of those is understandable, and none of them is a moral failing.

And whatever state you fear your mouth is in, it will not be the worst I have seen. I promise you that.

What happens at that first appointment

It is an examination and a conversation, nothing more. Specifically:

  1. We talk. About what has been bothering you, what you are worried about, and what you would like to be able to do again, whether that is eating comfortably or smiling in photographs.
  2. Your teeth are examined, individually, along with any existing fillings and crowns.
  3. Your gums are assessed and measured, which tells us a great deal about your long-term outlook.
  4. Your soft tissues are screened, including your tongue, cheeks and throat, and your jaw and neck are gently checked. This is your mouth cancer screening and takes moments.
  5. X-rays are taken if needed, which after a long gap is likely, since they show what no eye can.
  6. You get the findings in plain English, with a written plan and costs if anything needs doing.

Nothing is treated on that first visit unless you are in pain and want it dealt with. Our page on dental check-ups explains the examination in more detail.

Will anything hurt?

No. A check-up involves looking, gentle checking and talking. There is no drilling and no injection at that appointment.

That is precisely why it is the ideal first step back after a long gap: it is the gentlest appointment in dentistry, and nothing further happens without your understanding and agreement.

What if you find a lot of problems?

Then we make a plan, and we do it in stages.

The order matters and is genuinely reassuring: anything painful or infected is dealt with first, then gum health is stabilised, and only then does restorative work begin. That means the most important treatment happens early, and each stage is a sensible stopping point rather than leaving you mid-project.

Stages can be spread over months or years to suit your budget, and you will always have written costs before anything begins. Our post on spreading the cost of dental treatment explains how that works, and where a great deal needs attention, our page on full mouth rehabilitation covers the bigger picture.

You are also never obliged to accept any of it. Plenty of people take the plan home and start six months later, which is absolutely fine.

The worries people usually arrive with

“My teeth must be beyond saving.” Almost certainly not. Teeth that look hopeless are often very treatable, and even significantly broken-down mouths can be rebuilt.

“I’ll be lectured about not flossing.” You will not. You may be shown a technique that suits your mouth, which is a different thing.

“It’ll cost a fortune.” Possibly less than you fear, and the examination itself is one of the least expensive appointments in dentistry. Knowing the figure beats imagining it.

“They’ll want to pull everything out.” Extraction is a last resort here, and saving teeth is always considered first.

If you are genuinely frightened

Say so when you ring. It changes how the appointment is run, and gentle care for anxious patients is something this practice is known for.

Practically, that means everything is explained before it happens, you set the pace, and you can stop at any point. If a full examination feels like too much for a first visit, we can simply talk. Dental anxiety is extremely common, and the NHS has guidance on dental phobia if you would like to read more.

Why it is worth doing now

Dental problems do not stay still. Decay progresses, gum disease quietly destroys the bone that holds teeth in place, and both are considerably cheaper and simpler to treat earlier than later.

The gum point is the one people underestimate, because gum disease is largely painless until it is advanced. Plenty of people with significant bone loss feel absolutely fine. Our page on gum disease treatment explains why the early stage is fully reversible and the later stage is not.

There is also the mouth cancer screening, which happens at every check-up here regardless of how long you have been away, and which takes seconds.

What to take away

Coming back after years away is an examination, a conversation and a plan, with no judgement and no obligation. The first visit involves no treatment unless you want it, and whatever is found can nearly always be tackled in manageable stages.

Ring us on 01255 422506 whenever you feel ready. Our posts on mouth ulcers that do not heal and whether gum disease is reversible cover two things worth knowing in the meantime, and a hygiene appointment is often the perfect second step.

This article is general information rather than personal dental advice. Every mouth is different, so please speak to your dentist about your own teeth.

Dr Bilverdi is absolutely fantastic - best dentist I've ever been to. He's extremely accomodating, patient and caring, and has done a fantastic job on my teeth (fillings and a crown). He always goes the extra mile and really cares about his patients. The prices are very reasonable as well. Hope, the dental nurse is also just so lovely. I cannot recommend the practice highly enough. Thank you so much Dr Bilverdi and Hope!

I have been seeing Dr Bilverdi for nearly 20 years now. His care and attention to detail is first class and I have never had any trouble with his work. No filling or crown has fallen out and no treatment has had to be repeated. If you are not cleaning any areas he will point this out. A top class dentist and his assistant Hope is always very helpful and efficient.

I’m terrified of the dentist! This has meant that I have avoided attending pretty much all my adult life. My teeth were in an awful condition and I had to do something. Attending Tender Dental Care has been the best dental experience I’ve had, the thought, time, and care given has made a world of difference not only to my confidence in my smile but the avoidance of attending the dentist has been a complete turn around. The quality of work has been to the highest standards and the clinic is professional and warm. I cannot express how grateful I am for such brilliant care.

I rung around several dentists before settling on Tender Dental Care. They could see me weeks ahead of any other practice but what sold it to me was the fact that the dentist himself answered the phone and was really friendly. I was so nervous about going and actually quite embarrassed about the state of my teeth but Dr. Bilverdi was not only patient but totally non-judgemental. He explained everything that was happening and didn’t go straight in for “you need lots of fillings”, which is always a concern when you pay privately. He instead gave me a whole range of options to consider in my own time. Dr. Bilverdi really took his time with me and at no point did I feel rushed or like I couldn’t ask more questions. Hope is also lovely and the quiet, nicely decorated environment is so much nicer than the usual bustling dentist waiting room. I was the only person on site during the appointment. The price is pretty reasonable too, with each cost being broken down before you agree to it. I have finally found a dentist I trust and will absolutely not be leaving it 6 years until my next visit! I went in terrified and tearful that I was going to loose all my teeth but left feeling relieved and relaxed. I can highly recommend!

I have been a patient here for a few years now, and have always had an excellent experience! My young children attend with me, they are treated with kindness and sincerity and have no concerns about visiting the dentist. Always super clean, all of the equipment, as well as the surgery itself are maintained to a very high standard. Dr Bilverdi and Hope are clearly very experienced and provide a great service.

As a very nervous patient (we're talking panic attack in the waiting room in the past) Dr. Bilverdi and his nurse have been exceptional. I'm no longer scared to go to the dentist! He has a very calming and reassuring manner and takes the time to explain everything clearly. A single-dentist practice that has been there for 26 years, with a nurse who has worked with him for 15 years, is the main reason I chose this practice. That's not to say the other practices in the area aren't good. But I found Dr Bilverdi to be outstanding in all areas. As an anxious patient, it's good to know who I'm seeing every time. It's refreshing when you call to make an appointment, and the dentist answers the phone, and then when you arrive, he is sitting at the reception desk to greet you. Had to have several injections today and can honestly say that I barely felt a thing with zero pain! The numbing spray before the injections worked brilliantly. If you are nervous about visiting a dentist, I can highly recommend Dr Bilverdi at Tender Dental Care.

I needed an urgent appointment because of a tooth infection. I was seen to really quickly, treated with antibiotics. The tooth was taken out a week later. I was really nervous but I was put at ease by Dr Bilverdi and his assistant. The tooth came out OK in fact I didn't even feel a thing. I recommend Tender Dental Care, as the name says, Tender care.
