Veneers are a considerable investment, so how long do veneers last is a fair question to ask before committing. Porcelain veneers commonly serve for ten to fifteen years, and often longer, while composite veneers typically last five to eight. What decides where you land within those ranges is mostly about habits rather than materials.

The realistic lifespans
Porcelain veneers: ten to fifteen years is the usual expectation, and well-made veneers looked after carefully often go considerably beyond that.
Composite veneers: five to eight years before wanting refreshing or replacing, though they are far easier and cheaper to repair along the way.
These are averages rather than guarantees. I have seen porcelain veneers still looking excellent after twenty years, and I have seen others chip within two because of a habit nobody had addressed.
What actually decides how long yours last
- Whether you grind or clench. By a distance the biggest factor. Clenching forces are enormous and porcelain, for all its strength, is brittle.
- How well you clean. The veneer cannot decay, but the natural tooth at its margin certainly can, and decay there is the most common reason a veneer has to be replaced.
- Your gum health. Gums that recede expose the margin, which shows as a line and creates a new area to keep clean.
- Habits. Nail biting, opening packets with your teeth, chewing pens, ice and boiled sweets.
- The quality of the original work, including how well the veneer was bonded and how conservatively the tooth was prepared.
How veneers fail
Rarely by wearing out. The usual routes are:
- Chipping, most often at the biting edge and most often in grinders
- Debonding, where the veneer comes away intact, which can sometimes be re-bonded
- Decay at the margin, in the natural tooth beneath
- Gum recession, exposing the join
- Staining at the margin, where the join between veneer and tooth picks up colour over years
- The tooth beneath fracturing, which is the most serious and least common
Composite veneers add a further one: gradual staining and dulling of the material itself, since composite is slightly porous. Our post on how long composite bonding lasts covers that in detail.
Making yours last longer
- Wear a night guard if you grind. The single most effective protection there is, and worth the cost several times over.
- Clean the gum line thoroughly, angling your brush towards where veneer meets tooth.
- Clean between your teeth daily, since margins between teeth are where decay begins.
- Keep your check-ups and hygiene visits, where the margins are examined and early problems caught.
- Use a non-abrasive toothpaste. Harsh whitening pastes dull the surface polish over time.
- Do not use your teeth as tools. Ever, but especially now.
What happens when one needs replacing
The old veneer is removed, the tooth beneath assessed and any decay treated, and a new veneer made. It is essentially the original process again, and because a thin layer of enamel was removed the first time, the tooth is usually already prepared.
Occasionally, where the tooth has lost more structure over the years, a crown becomes the better restoration than another veneer. Our post on what to do when a crown comes off covers that territory.
Composite veneers are considerably simpler to refresh, since new composite bonds happily to old and no laboratory work is involved.
The lifetime commitment
This is the part worth understanding before you start rather than after. Because preparing a tooth for a porcelain veneer removes enamel permanently, that tooth will generally always need a veneer or crown covering it.
So the honest way to think about veneers is not “how long will this one last” but “am I comfortable maintaining a veneer on this tooth indefinitely”. Over forty years, that may mean three or four veneers.
