It is a question I am asked increasingly, usually by someone who has switched and wants to know whether they have done their mouth a favour. Is vaping better for your teeth than smoking? On the evidence, yes, meaningfully so. Is it harmless? No. Both halves of that answer matter.

The honest position
UK health authorities take the view that vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking, and that it is a legitimate tool for adult smokers who want to quit. That position is reflected in NHS stop smoking services, which support switching.
The same authorities are equally clear that vaping is not risk-free and is not for people who have never smoked.
For your mouth specifically, the comparison is favourable but not a clean bill of health.
What improves when you switch
- Staining. Tar is what stains teeth brown, and vapour contains no tar. New staining largely stops, though existing staining stays until it is professionally polished away.
- Gum blood flow. Cigarette smoke contains thousands of combustion products that restrict blood supply to the gums. Removing those improves circulation, which improves the gums’ ability to resist and recover from infection.
- Healing. Smokers heal poorly after extractions and gum treatment. Switching improves that, though nicotine itself still has some effect on blood vessels.
- Breath. The distinctive smell of tobacco on the breath goes.

What vaping still does
Being straight about the other side.
Dry mouth is the most commonly reported effect. Propylene glycol, a common base ingredient, is hygroscopic and draws moisture, and many vapers notice a persistently dry mouth. That matters, because saliva protects against decay and gum disease, and reduced saliva raises the risk of both. Nicotine still affects the gums. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, so some of the masking effect on bleeding gums continues, and some effect on healing persists.
Sweet flavourings are worth considering. Many liquids contain sweet flavour compounds, and while they are not sugar in the dietary sense, frequent all-day use keeps the mouth in a state it does not enjoy, and some flavourings are acidic.
The long-term picture is genuinely incomplete. Vaping has not been in widespread use long enough for decades-long oral health data to exist. Anyone claiming certainty in either direction is going beyond the evidence.
If you have never smoked
Then the calculation is entirely different, and there is no upside to weigh against the risks. UK guidance is consistent that vaping is for smokers trying to quit, not for anyone else, and particularly not for young people.
Vaping as a quitting tool
Evidence suggests vaping can be effective for quitting smoking, particularly when combined with behavioural support.
Two practical points. Switching completely matters: continuing to smoke alongside vaping means still getting the combustion products, and the health gains are minimal. And vaping ideally works as a stage rather than a destination, with many people eventually reducing nicotine strength and stopping altogether.

Looking after your mouth if you vape
- Drink water regularly to counter dry mouth, and consider sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva.
- Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, which matters more when saliva is reduced.
- Clean between your teeth daily.

- Mention that you vape, so your dentist can interpret what is seen accurately.
Where the evidence stands
Reasonably strong on the comparison with smoking, considerably weaker on long-term absolute effects. The NHS guidance on vaping to quit smoking sets out the current position.
For a dentist, the practical implication is straightforward: if you have switched from smoking, your mouth is better off and I am pleased for you. If you have never smoked, please do not start.
