A denture breaks at the worst possible moment, usually on a Friday evening or the morning of something important. The temptation to reach for the superglue is entirely understandable. Before you do, here is why repairing broken dentures at home is one of the few pieces of DIY I would ask you never to attempt.

Why repairing broken dentures at home goes wrong
Three things tend to happen, and none of them help.
Household glue is not safe in the mouth
Superglue and similar adhesives are not manufactured for oral use. They can irritate the soft tissues of your mouth and are not designed to be in contact with saliva day after day. Whatever the packet says about bonding almost anything, your mouth is not one of the surfaces it was tested on.
The repair almost never holds
A denture flexes constantly as you chew and speak. A glued join has none of the strength of the original material and typically fails within days, often mid-meal, and frequently in a slightly different place than before.
It can make a professional repair impossible
This is the one that really matters. Glue seeps into the fracture line and sets hard, so the broken pieces can no longer be aligned precisely. A denture that could have been repaired properly on Monday sometimes cannot be repaired at all once it has been glued on Saturday. What would have been a straightforward fix becomes a new denture.
Shop-bought denture repair kits carry the same risk. They are marketed as temporary, but the material still contaminates the fracture surfaces.
What to do instead when a denture breaks
- Stop wearing it. A cracked denture can rub, and sharp edges can cut your gums or tongue.
- Keep every piece. Including small fragments and any tooth that has come away. Put them somewhere safe, ideally in a container rather than loose in a pocket.
- Do not file, bend or trim anything. Reshaping the broken edges makes accurate reassembly harder.
- Keep the denture damp if it will be a day or two, in water or denture cleaning solution, so it does not dry out and distort.
- Ring your dentist. Explain what has happened and how much of it has broken.
Can a broken denture actually be repaired?
In most cases, yes, and more easily than people expect. Common repairs include:
- A cracked or fractured plate, bonded back together with proper dental materials
- A chipped or lost denture tooth, replaced and matched to the existing teeth
- A broken clasp on a partial denture
- A denture that has snapped clean in two, which sounds dramatic but is often very repairable when the pieces are intact and uncontaminated
What matters most is that the fracture surfaces are clean. That is the whole argument against the glue.
Why did it break in the first place?
A denture that breaks once will often break again unless the underlying reason is addressed. Usually it is one of these:
- It was dropped. The most common cause by far, which is why cleaning over a folded towel or a basin of water is worth the habit.
- The fit has changed. Gums and the bone beneath them slowly change shape over the years. A denture that no longer sits evenly is stressed in places it was never designed to be stressed, and eventually cracks.
- It is simply old. Denture materials do fatigue. Most need replacing after five to ten years.
That second point is the one people miss. Repeated breakages are often a sign that the denture needs relining or replacing rather than just mending, and mending alone will keep you on the same treadmill.
What happens at the appointment
I will look at both the denture and your mouth. The denture tells me where it failed; your gums tell me why. From there the options are usually a straightforward repair, a reline to restore the fit, or, where the denture has genuinely reached the end of its working life, a new denture.
You will get an honest answer about which is worth doing. If a repair will hold, that is what I will recommend, and if it would only be a short-term patch I will tell you that before you spend anything.
If you are missing only a few teeth and are weighing up alternatives, a fixed bridge is sometimes worth considering too, though it depends entirely on the teeth you still have.
Looking after a denture so it lasts
Prevention is undramatic but effective. Clean your denture daily over a towel or a full sink, use a soft brush and denture cleaner rather than ordinary toothpaste, which is abrasive, and store it in water overnight so it does not dry out. And bring it to your check-ups. A denture’s fit is checked alongside your gums and any remaining teeth, which is how small problems get caught before they become breakages.
The short answer
Do not repair a broken denture at home. Keep all the pieces, leave the glue in the drawer, and ring us. Most breaks are properly repairable, and often quickly, provided the fracture has not been contaminated first.
