There are no surprises in it, and understanding the appointment often takes the edge off for anyone who finds dental visits difficult.
A check-up is an examination and a conversation. Nothing more is done without discussing it with you first.

What happens during a dental check-up, step by step
1. We talk first
Before anything else, I want to hear from you. Has anything been bothering you? A twinge, a rough edge, a tooth that feels different? Have you had any changes to your general health or medication since we last met? This part matters more than people expect, because your own account often points straight at what needs looking at.
2. Your teeth are examined
Every tooth is checked individually, along with any existing fillings, crowns and other dental work. I am looking for decay, cracks, wear, movement and anything failing at the edges. A small mirror and good light do most of the work here.
3. Your gums are assessed
Gums matter as much as teeth. I check for redness, swelling, bleeding and any pockets forming between gum and tooth, which are the early signs of gum disease. Since gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults and rarely hurts in its early stages, this part of the examination is quietly one of the most valuable.
4. Your soft tissues are screened
The lining of your cheeks and lips, the roof and floor of your mouth, and your tongue, including its sides and underside, are all examined. Your jaw and neck are gently felt for any swelling. This is your mouth cancer screening, it happens at every visit, and it takes moments.
5. X-rays, if they are needed
Not every check-up requires them. When they are needed, X-rays show what no eye can see, particularly decay between teeth and problems beneath existing fillings. I will always explain why I am recommending them.
6. We discuss what I have found
Whatever the outcome, you will hear it in plain English. If everything is well, I will tell you so. If something needs attention, I will explain what it is, show you where possible, and set out your options with written costs before anything is booked.
How long does a check-up take?
A routine check-up usually takes around fifteen to twenty minutes. A first examination for a new patient takes longer, because there is more to look at and more to talk about. Neither should feel rushed, and if you have questions, that is exactly what the time is for.
Does a check-up hurt?
No. A check-up involves looking, gentle checking and talking. There is no drilling and no injection. This is why, if you are nervous, a check-up is the ideal first step back: it is the gentlest appointment in dentistry, and nothing further happens without your agreement.
How often should I come?
It depends on your mouth rather than a fixed rule. Many patients are seen every six to twelve months. A healthy mouth with no history of problems may need less frequent visits, while gum disease or a lot of existing dental work warrants closer attention. You will be given an interval that suits you.

What if you find a problem?
Then you will be told plainly what it is, and given your options with no pressure to decide on the spot. The great advantage of regular check-ups is that problems found here are almost always smaller, simpler and cheaper to treat than problems found when pain finally forces the issue. A small filling today rather than root canal treatment next year is not a slogan; it is genuinely how most dental problems progress.
What happens after the examination?
Two things usually follow. First, we agree when I should see you next. Second, if your gums would benefit from it, we book a hygiene appointment, which is the active cleaning that complements the examination. The check-up finds problems; hygiene care prevents them.

Then you are far from unusual, and you will not be judged. Life gets in the way for all sorts of reasons: cost, fear, moving house, a practice closing. What matters is that you are here now. The examination is the same calm process, and any plan is built at whatever pace suits you.
