How long does composite bonding last is usually answered as five to eight years, and the range depends almost entirely on what you do with it.

Five to eight years is the usual expectation before bonding wants refreshing or replacing. Smaller repairs on teeth that take little force often go longer; bonding on biting edges in someone who grinds may want attention considerably sooner.
It is worth understanding that bonding rarely fails suddenly. It dulls, picks up stain at the margins, and perhaps chips a little, so the question is usually when you decide it needs refreshing rather than when it stops working.
What affects it most
- Where it sits. Bonding on the biting edge of a front tooth takes real force every day. Bonding filling a small gap between teeth takes almost none.

- Your diet and habits. Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking stain it; nail biting and using teeth as tools chip it.
- Your cleaning. Plaque at the margins causes both staining and decay in the tooth beneath.
- How it was placed. Careful layering, proper isolation and thorough polishing all extend its life.
How bonding actually fails

- Chipping, usually at a biting edge and usually from grinding or a hard bite on something.
- Loss of polish, so it looks duller than the tooth around it. Often restored at a hygiene visit.
- Margin discolouration, a fine dark line where composite meets tooth.
- Debonding, where a section comes away entirely, which is less common.
- Decay in the tooth beneath, at the margin.
Making yours last longer
- Wear a night guard if you grind. It protects bonding just as it protects enamel.
- Do not bite anything hard with bonded edges. Cut apples rather than biting them, and never open packets with your teeth.
- Rinse with water after tea, coffee and red wine.
- Use a non-abrasive toothpaste. Harsh whitening pastes dull the polished surface, which then stains faster.
- Clean between your teeth daily, since the margins are where trouble starts.
- Keep hygiene appointments, where polishing refreshes the surface.

The repair advantage
This is bonding’s genuine strength and it changes how the lifespan question should be read.
New composite bonds happily to old, so a chip is usually repaired in a single short appointment at modest cost, and a dulled surface is often restored with polishing alone. Where a piece needs replacing entirely, that too is straightforward, with no laboratory work and no waiting.
Compare that with porcelain, where a chip generally means remaking the whole thing. Bonding needs attention sooner but forgives it far more easily.
Compared with porcelain

Is the shorter lifespan a problem?
That depends on what you value, and there is no universally right answer.
Consider the arithmetic honestly. Bonding refreshed twice over fifteen years may still cost less than a set of porcelain veneers, and it does so while leaving your natural teeth essentially intact. For many patients that is the better bargain, particularly for smaller changes.
For extensive changes across several front teeth, where longevity and stain resistance matter most, porcelain often justifies its cost.
