Night-time grinding is remarkably common and almost entirely invisible to the person doing it. That is the difficulty: the signs you grind your teeth at night are things you notice indirectly, or things somebody else spots first. Here is what to look for, and why it is worth acting on rather than living with.

Signs you notice in the morning
The clearest clues arrive early in the day, because they follow a night of muscle activity:
- Jaw ache or stiffness on waking, easing through the morning
- A dull headache around the temples, present when you wake rather than developing later
- Teeth that feel tender or slightly loose first thing
- Aching around the ears or the sides of the face
- Difficulty opening your mouth wide in the morning
- Disturbed sleep without an obvious reason

Signs in your teeth
These are what I look for at a check-up, and they are often the first firm evidence:
- Flattened biting edges, where front teeth have lost their gentle curve
- Shiny, worn patches on the biting surfaces of back teeth
- Teeth looking shorter than in older photographs
- Small chips along the edges
- Thin, translucent tips on front teeth where enamel has worn through
- Increased sensitivity to hot and cold
- Fillings and crowns that keep chipping or coming loose
- Cracks in teeth, sometimes visible, sometimes only showing up as pain on biting
Signs inside your mouth
Two are particularly telling, and almost nobody spots them in themselves:
A ridged line along the inside of your cheeks, roughly level with where your teeth meet. It is caused by cheek tissue being pressed against the teeth during clenching.
Scalloped indentations along the edges of your tongue, where it has been pressed against the teeth.
Neither is harmful in itself, but together they are strong evidence of sustained clenching.
What other people notice
A partner hearing grinding in the night is the most direct evidence of all, and it is often what prompts the appointment. It is worth saying that not all grinders make a noise: plenty of people clench firmly without any audible grinding at all, and do just as much damage.
So an absence of night-time noise does not rule it out.
Why grinding happens
Usually a combination of factors. Stress and anxiety are the most commonly identified drivers, which is why many people notice symptoms flaring during difficult periods. Sleep quality plays a part, certain medications and stimulants can contribute, and the way your teeth meet is sometimes relevant.
The important point is that it happens during sleep, entirely outside conscious control. Reducing stress may help and is worth doing anyway, but it is not something you can decide to stop.

Why it is worth acting on
Because the damage accumulates silently, and enamel does not grow back.
Grinding wears teeth down, chips edges, cracks cusps, breaks fillings and crowns, and in time can change how your teeth meet altogether. It also puts sustained strain on the jaw joints and muscles.

What helps
A custom night guard is the mainstay. Made from precise impressions of your teeth, it is slim enough to sleep in and takes the grinding forces instead of your enamel. It does not stop you grinding, and be wary of anything claiming to, but it makes grinding harmless to your teeth. Our page on bite guards and splints explains how they are made.
Shop-bought boil-and-bite guards are bulky, wear through in months and often end up unworn, which protects nothing.
Alongside that: a warm compress on the jaw muscles in the morning, avoiding chewing gum and very chewy foods, noticing and releasing daytime clenching, and anything that genuinely reduces stress.

In summary
The signs you grind your teeth at night are mostly indirect: morning jaw ache and headaches, worn or chipped teeth, ridged cheeks, scalloped tongue edges, and dental work that keeps failing. Since grinding happens in your sleep, protection rather than willpower is the answer.
