What it is
The Inman Aligner is a removable orthodontic appliance designed specifically to straighten the front teeth, usually the upper or lower front six.
It consists of a small metal bar that sits across the front of the teeth and a component that sits behind them, connected by nickel titanium coil springs. It is removable, worn for most of the day, and taken out for eating and cleaning.
Visually it is more noticeable than a clear aligner, since the bar across the front is visible when you smile. That is the main trade-off, and it buys speed.
How it works
The mechanism is neatly simple. The springs power two opposing components that squeeze gently towards each other, one pushing forwards from behind the teeth and one pulling gently backwards from the front.
The teeth sit between those two gentle forces, which work continuously to guide them into line. Because the force is light but constant, and because it is applied across a very narrow range of movement, the teeth move efficiently.
Unlike clear aligners, which use a series of trays each slightly different, the Inman Aligner is a single appliance that continues working throughout treatment, adjusted as needed at review appointments.
How fast is it?
This is its main selling point. Treatment commonly takes somewhere between six and eighteen weeks, with many straightforward cases completing in around three to four months.
Do treat any quoted timescale with sensible caution until your teeth have been examined. How far the teeth need to travel, how your bite behaves and how consistently the appliance is worn all affect it, and anybody quoting a duration before looking in your mouth is estimating.
Who it suits
It is designed for a specific job and does it well:
- Mild to moderate crowding of the front teeth
- Teeth that protrude slightly and need bringing back into line
- Relapse after previous orthodontics, where teeth have drifted since braces as a teenager and retainers were not worn. This is a very common reason adults seek it out.
- Anyone wanting a quick, cosmetic correction of the teeth that show when they smile
It also suits people who would struggle with the discipline of changing aligner trays on schedule, since there is only one appliance to manage.
Who it does not suit
Being clear about the limits matters as much as the benefits:
- Cases needing movement beyond the front teeth. This is a front-six treatment, not full orthodontics.
- Significant bite problems, which need comprehensive treatment.
- Severe crowding, where there is simply not enough room without more extensive work.
- Active gum disease, which must be treated and stabilised before any tooth movement.
- Anyone unwilling to wear a visible appliance, in which case clear aligners are the better route.
It is a cosmetic treatment focused on appearance rather than a comprehensive correction of how your teeth bite together, and that distinction should be clear before you start.
Inman Aligner versus clear aligners
Inman Aligner: usually faster, a single appliance rather than a series, effective for mild to moderate front-teeth crowding, and often less expensive. Against that, it is visible when worn and limited to the front teeth.
Clear aligners: far more discreet, capable of treating a wider range of cases including movement beyond the front six, and generally more comfortable. Against that, treatment usually takes longer and depends on you changing trays diligently.

What wearing one is actually like
Expect to wear it around 16 to 20 hours a day, removing it for meals and cleaning.
The first few days feel odd, with some pressure on the teeth, which is the sensation of them being asked to move rather than pain. Speech takes a little adjusting to, and reading aloud at home for ten minutes a day speeds that up considerably.
You will have review appointments every few weeks so progress can be checked and adjustments made.
And then the part that applies to every orthodontic treatment: retainers. Teeth drift back without retention, at any age and after any treatment. Retainers worn nightly are permanent, and for the many patients who come to the Inman Aligner precisely because they relapsed after teenage braces, that lesson is already learned.
